Let The Sun Shine In!!!
It's called the
Glassback... and
it's like nothing I had ever seen before! That was in the fall of 2005
and MRT had
installed a prototype in their 2005 SEMA car, the Interceptor. It was
simply incredible... You basically cut the roof out and replace it with some
high-tech laminate glass! And just who makes this
Glassback?
The folks over at
Classic
Design Concepts or
CDC for
short. CDC
has a long history of producing high quality products that really make your
car stand out. And for me, the CDC Glassback is the ultimate
appearance mod!
So after all most 2 years of wanting... and with the MRT Interceptor being a
constant reminder of just how cool the Glassback is... well, I finally
pulled the trigger! Yep, the planets and the stars aligned just right
and it was time to get my own Glassback! No more drooling over the
Interceptor's! It's was the start of what I called Project Can Opener!

Here's an example of the roof cut out. Now you know why I called it Poject
Can Opener!

From the ground the Glassblack looks like the roof has just been painted
glossy black... but from the top... |

New headliner is included |

The outside appearance change is dramatic! |

And I just had buy a CDC Detail Corral while I was there! |

My first impressions... This thing is SOOOOOO
COOOOOL!!! You cannot believe the open feeling it gives you. Now I have
owned convertibles in the past. I've owned cars with T-Tops. Is
the Glassback the same as a convertible? No, it is different, but to
me the Glassback gives me an incredible open feeling, especially with the
windows down! And on the really HOT days, I can put the windows up, turn on
the AC and still have that open feeling with the panoramic view! Can't do
that in a Vert! And since the Glassback blocks like 98% of the UV light,
well, I don't have to worry about burning my bald head!!! (I hate
driving with a hat on!)
Now personally, I prefer the looks of an S197 coupe over that of an S197
convertible with the top up. The Glassback allows me to keep the looks
of my coupe! And the black glossy look matches perfectly with the black
panels on my hood! It has drastically changed the outside look of the
Mistress... for the better!!!
Did I mention my stereo now sounds better? Turns out the Glassback reduces
the noise in the cabin by up to 6 decibels. I also noticed that the hard
surface of the Glassback made the music a bit "brighter" and seemed to raise
the sound stage up a bit. Both of these were very pleasant changes!
Conclusion... The Glassback gives me the wide open feeling I like from a
convertible, the looks of a coupe and eliminates the drawbacks of a
convertible. (Yes, there are drawbacks. Remember I traded a Porsche
Boxster in on the Mistress and prior to that I owned a Mustang GT
convertible, so I know there are drawbacks.) The Glassback has far
exceeded my expectations as far as what I thought it would bring to the car.
It's a great mod on so many different levels! This is one mod I would
do over and over again!
I would also like to thank Kim and Nick, along with all the other fine folks
at CDC!
The Glassback is an incredible product! (as well as all the other
great CDC
items!) |
