The Mistress Gets The Shaft!
| New drive shaft that is! A better drive
shaft has been on my list of things to add to the Mistress for quite some
time. With the stock 2005 drive shaft I always felt like i was living on
borrowed time. There have been incidents of the stock drive shafts
self-destructing on the dyno. The stock drive shaft is heavy and tend
to vibrate pretty good. Plus the u-joints are staked in as opposed to
clipped in. I have seen shafts where the stakes have actually bent
back over allow then u-joint caps to walk out! YIKES!!! So with that in
mind I ordered a new 4 inch aluminum drive shaft from the guys at
Shaftmasters in
Lincoln Park, Michigan. The drive shaft shipped out the day I ordered it and
was delivered the next day.
The first thing I noticed about the new shaft was it's weight or lack there
of... While we didn't put the new shafts on the scale, I would guess that
the shaft is around 14 or 15 pounds. The stock shaft is about 40!
We also noticed the shaft was built with Neapco U-Joints. From what
I've been able to learn, Neapco U-Joints are American Made and are a high
quality u-joint, which means a smooth spinning shaft!
So after all that, did the new drive shaft make a difference? You bet
it did! I did a few spirited takes off from a dead stop. While I have
no proof, the Mistress certainly felt peppier. The acceleration was
quick and smooth. Now previous to the new drive shaft, at highway
speeds (70 to 80 MPH) it seemed like the Mistress had some vibrations that
felt like it could have been coming from the stock shaft. I have
since taken the car out on a couple of highway runs with the new shaft....
Vibration gone! The Mistress is definitely cruising a lot smoother at
these speeds
Bottom line... The new drive shaft from
Shaftmasters was a
great investment! I am now very confident that I can put my car on the dyno
and not worry if today is the day my drive shaft falls out! The new light
shaft also seems to have given me a nice performance boost and an more
comfortable ride! So thanks to the guys at
Shaftmasters for
very nice product! |
