The Great Exhaust Experiment!

One thing about the new 2010 V6 Camaro.... it's quiet!  And well, to be polite let's just say the stock mufflers are not exactly astheically pleasing.  I knew something needed to be DONE!   So I called on my friends at MRT!  While MRT is known for thier extraordinary work in the Mustang world, they are certainly not known for their work on Camaros!  But, there is no one else more I would to trust to work on my car other than Scott Hoag and the crew at MRT!

I made arrangements with Scott to head down to MRT to see what he could come up with...  It was the start of  The Great Exhaust Experiment!

The first step in the experiment of course was to cut off the stock mufflers!

Stock Mufflers
The mufflers weigh 24 pounds EACH!

First experiment of the day was doing a simple straight pipe, basically a muffler delete.  Phwew, was that ever a complete failure!  The sound at start up was ok and even idle wasn't bad... but give the car any throttle and it was HORRID!  On the street some how it got even worse! So back into the shop for round two.   Scott then grabbed some chambered mufflers.  Sound was slightly better but still a bit to raspy!  Scott disappeared for a minute and reappeared with a couple of Aero Turbine resonators.  Now I had an Aero Turbine muffler on my Mustang and was very impressed! So I had high hopes for these resonators!

With the new resonators on Scott started the car up!  WOW!  That sounds great!  How about the "Rev Test"  Dang, that sounds good too!  That nasty rasp is not there! Final test... take her for a drive!  So Scott and I climb into the car and off we go!  Scott  does a little spirted driving through the complex... so far so good!  Time now for the BIG TEST. Hard accelleration on to the expressway!  Scott jumps on the throttle!  Car ROARS to life and takes off!  Scott and I nod to each other and smile in agreement!  We have found the sound we were looking for!!!

Once back at the shop Scott grabs another set of resonators to see if they offer any improvement... nope, they do not sound as good! So it was settled, we would stick with the Aero Turbines!

Scott has decided to actually turn our exhaust experiment into an actual axle back kit!  The kit will be made completely of 304-T Stainless Steel, including the piping, tips and hangers! As soon as the finished production version is available I will go ahead and get some better pictures!  In the mean time here are a couple of pictures of my prototype!
